Yesterday the lovely Sami from Slim Sam’s Cakery popped by my house to drop off some of her low fat and yummy baked delights. Whilst enjoying my ‘Cake in a Cup’ this morning with my coffee I was trying to think of the topic of my next blog post. This delicious treat was the answer, a successful marketing plan is a little like baking a cake. Just like baking a cake creating a marketing plan requires patience and an understanding of your ingredients.
You need a good recipe. Without clear directions your cake is going to be a big flop and the same applies with your marketing plan. You need to define the steps needed, and understand how you are going to reach your goal.
You need to follow the steps exactly. From experience rushing through and missing steps whilst baking is only going to result in a soggy bottom (and no one likes a soggy bottom). Your marketing strategy is the same, you cannot rush ahead to execution until you know you have the right message. It’s a step by step process.
Timings and temperature are key elements in baking and marketing too. There is no point having a great recipe, all the correct ingredients and you’ve mixed them all together in the right order only to ignore these two vital components at the final stage. I find that most ovens vary and it can be a bit of experiment at the final baking stage, and I think this applies to marketing. Sometimes things just do not go to plan. So what do you do? Well, you definitely do not give up. You need to keep going, you need to find that step that just wasn’t quite right, re-adjust and carry on. Try different tactics and learn from what went wrong. Eventually all your efforts will rise to an all new level with a little time and effort.
